Retirement

Eugene has been selected by many sources over the past decade as one of the best places to retire in the country. Quality of life, mild climate, taxes, crime rate and affordability of housing are just a few of the reasons noted. Nicely located between the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains makes for many outdoor opportunities for hiking, biking, golfing, river rafting, boating and fishing. There are chances to volunteer, visit the symphony, opera, and ballet or take one of the many classes in a program offered by University of Oregon specifically for seniors called Learning in Retirement - 541/346-0697

Eugene was selected as the "Best Place to Retire in the Northwest" in MONEY Magazine's 2001 annual list.

Services to seniors in Lane County are varied and comprehensive. They range from information referral, escort transportation, and in-home counseling to delivered meals (Meals on Wheels) and home health care. With a focus on community-based care, assistance is also available to assess an individual's need for institutional care. In fact, help can even be obtained for those within institutions that have the desire and the capacity to return to a less-restricted setting.

There are many retirement living options available in Eugene-Springfield ranging from owning or renting in a senior community to full service assisted living facilities. Eugene is also home to many gated communities for those residents over 55. Many of these feature clubhouses, ponds and waterways with wildlife, walking paths and other amenities.
